Alberta Energy Investment Gap Assessment (AEIGA)

Current Initiative
Investigating Alberta's energy investment gaps to identify roadblocks to bankability.

Overview

Alberta's energy sector is full of opportunity — but across key energy pathways, investment still stalls.

The Alberta Energy Investment Gap Assessment (AEIGA) is designed to map exactly where and why capital isn't flowing, and what it would take to change that. It also examines Alberta's energy investment landscape across multiple pathways and project stages — from early development through to operations. It identifies the real barriers blocking capital: policy uncertainty, infrastructure gaps, technology risk, Indigenous partnership readiness and social license challenges.

Rather than producing a list of policy problems, AEIGA will translate these barriers into practical, investor-ready insights — pinpointing which interventions would improve project bankability and accelerate carbon efficient energy investment in Alberta.

The result will be a clear, evidence-based picture of Alberta's energy investment gaps that can be used by investors, governments, and energy developers alike. By making capital allocation barriers visible and actionable, AEIGA will help more projects close — supporting Alberta's economic competitiveness and long-term carbon efficient energy goals.

Why It Matters

Hypothesis

If we can clearly identify where energy investment gets stuck in Alberta — and understand the specific risks putting investors off at each stage — then we can develop targeted solutions that make projects cheaper to finance, faster to deliver, and better for both Alberta's economy and its emissions goals.

Our Approach

Our approach combines rigorous evidence synthesis with investor-grade analysis to map where capital is not flowing across Alberta's energy pathways — and why.

We will assess investment gaps by pathway, project stage, and capital type, examining both technical and financial barriers alongside psycho-social factors that materially shape investor confidence.

Evidence will be gathered through structured stakeholder interviews, document review, and triangulation across multiple independent sources, with AI-assisted tools used to accelerate synthesis, ensure consistency, and maintain full claim traceability. The result will be a transparent, decision-grade assessment: comparable pathway briefs, a clear bankability framework, and scenario-aligned constraints that translate directly into actionable signals for investors and policymakers alike.
