About the Event

How might we better enable the integration of non-wires solutions into transmission and distribution planning in a way that benefits consumers and incentivizes utilities to implement them?

Why Non-Wires Solutions (NWS) , Why Now?

NWS have been identified by AEF participants and independent research as a fundamental key to unlocking our co-created future state. A future state where customers have increased choices when it comes to their electricity; businesses have greater economic & entrepreneurial opportunities; and utilities have enhanced tools for system resiliency, all of which enable more affordable electricity services. There is a desire from AEF participants to work collaboratively with government and the regulator to find a solution to near-term implementation of NWS.

Our Approach

On March 10, 2026 AEF hosted 40 key stakeholders with diverse perspectives across sectors, including representatives of the system operator, regulator, generation, transmission, distribution, retail, think tanks, the provincial government and provincial consumer advocate, industry associations, NGOs, consumer associations, and consultants to explore how NWS might be enabled to add value to our grid in the coming years and the conditions required to support their deployment.

Insights from this session may serve as critical inputs to the anticipated GoA Distribution Policy engagement, expected in 2026.
