Richard Hiller

Director, Future Materials Alliance

Energy Futures Lab

Richard Hiller is Director of the Future Materials Alliance at the Energy Futures Lab, where he connects strategy to action across industry, government, and investment to advance a more integrated, resilient, and competitive critical minerals and materials ecosystem in Canada.

Richard has extensive experience working across governments and with industry to translate technical, geopolitical, and economic considerations into clear strategy and coordinated action. He led implementation of Alberta’s Minerals Strategy and Action Plan and advanced intergovernmental and stakeholder collaboration across western and northern Canada on critical minerals development.

Throughout his career, Richard has played a key role in shaping energy strategies, including leadership on Alberta’s Hydrogen Roadmap, Natural Gas Vision and Strategy, and emerging areas such as geothermal, nuclear energy and small modular reactors, while operating at the centre of government and Cabinet decision making.

We gratefully acknowledge the original territories of the Siksikáwa, Îyârhe Nakodabi, and Tsuut’ina Dene, of Mohkínstsisakápiyoyis, Wincheesh-pah, Kootsisáw, or the colonized lands which many now refer to as Calgary, where the Energy Futures Lab is headquartered. These Lands are also home to members of the Métis Nation of Alberta under the Otipemisiwak Métis Government — District 4 & 5, whose peoples have deep relationships with the land. This reminds all of us to walk in a good way and remember our commitments to Indigenous Peoples.
