Energy Futures Lab, Battery Metals Association of Canada

These insights emerged from a series of gatherings that brought together Indigenous leaders, industry representatives, and government participants in close partnership with the Battery Metals Association of Canada (BMAC). These conversations were guided by the leadership, lived experience, and knowledge of an Indigenous Advisory Circle.

Authored by BMAC, this report reflects efforts to bridge Indigenous and industry perspectives. Grounded a collaborative process designed to centre Indigenous voices and create space for honest, cross-sector dialogue, it reflects what was shared, learned, and questioned and points to the potential for for trust-based, reciprocal, and equitable partnerships.

This is neither a roadmap nor a set of recommendations; it highlights a journey, and an invitation to to continue conversations and explorations of how to uphold Indigenous rights, knowledge systems, and leadership as Canada’s battery and critical minerals value chains take root.

We gratefully acknowledge the original territories of the Siksikáwa, Îyârhe Nakodabi, and Tsuut’ina Dene, of Mohkínstsisakápiyoyis, Wincheesh-pah, Kootsisáw, or the colonized lands which many now refer to as Calgary, where the Energy Futures Lab is headquartered. These Lands are also home to members of the Métis Nation of Alberta under the Otipemisiwak Métis Government — District 4 & 5, whose peoples have deep relationships with the land. This reminds all of us to walk in a good way and remember our commitments to Indigenous Peoples.
