A Roadmap for Canada’s Battery Value Chain

Building a national strategy for critical minerals and green battery metals

A Roadmap for Canada’s Battery Value Chain

Author

Energy Futures Lab

Demand for electric vehicles is growing at a rate that exceeds even the most robust recent predictions. This roadmap presents a national strategy for Canada to capitalize on its abundant mineral resources while working towards a prosperous net-zero future.

The roadmap outlines the action items required to meet net zero targets and electric vehicle demand in Canada, including collaborative partnerships between governments, industry, Indigenous communities and organizations, universities, and civil society organizations via public-private-Indigenous partnerships and the required steps to forge a homegrown ecosystem.

The report is the result of a collaborative effort between Transition Accelerator, the Battery Metals Association of Canada, Energy Futures Lab, and Accelerate.

We gratefully acknowledge the original territories of the Siksikáwa, Îyârhe Nakodabi, and Tsuut’ina Dene, of Mohkínstsisakápiyoyis, Wincheesh-pah, Kootsisáw, or the colonized lands which many now refer to as Calgary, where the Energy Futures Lab is headquartered. These Lands are also home to members of the Métis Nation of Alberta under the Otipemisiwak Métis Government — District 4 & 5, whose peoples have deep relationships with the land. This reminds all of us to walk in a good way and remember our commitments to Indigenous Peoples.
